  • Paste a shop linkThe app reads the fibers, name and photo from the shop's page.

Seven measures

Every piece, graded A to D

Each piece gets a grade on seven measures, and an overall grade.

  • WaterWater needed to grow and make the fiber
  • ChemicalsPesticides and processing chemicals
  • ClimateGreenhouse gases, from farm to finished fiber
  • DurabilityHow long it lasts in wear
  • End of lifeWhether it breaks down naturally
  • MicroplasticsWhether it sheds plastic
  • Skin & comfortBreathable, soft, kind to skin

How we grade

From the label to a grade

We grade the fibers on the label, not the brand or the factory. Every step is here, so you can check our work.

  1. Read the label. The outer fabric and, if the whole piece is lined, the lining.
  2. Leave out tiny amounts. If the fibers under 5% add up to 5% or less, the rest counts as 100%.
  3. Average by share. Each fiber has a score from 0 to 100 on each measure. The piece's score is the average, weighted by percentage. A lined piece counts 60% outer fabric and 40% lining.
  4. Blends and certifications. A natural fiber mixed with more than 5% synthetic can't go above C for End of life: blends can't be composted, and their fibers can't be separated for recycling. A standard named on the label or by the brand lifts the score, never above 95:
    • GOTS (organic): Chemicals +10, Skin +5
    • OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Skin +10
    • bluesign: Chemicals +10
    • LENZING™ ECOVERO™, TENCEL™ Modal, FSC (viscose and modal): Chemicals +25, Water +15, Climate +10
  5. The overall grade. The seven measures together, weighted:
  • End of life20%
  • Microplastics20%
  • Chemicals15%
  • Climate15%
  • Water10%
  • Durability10%
  • Skin & comfort10%

The grades

  • A80–100
  • B60–79
  • C40–59
  • Dunder 40
  • Unknown or “other” fibers are graded as polyester, the most common synthetic.
  • Same buttons as the Clothing Check. Each piece also shows its Finest, Fine or Fair buttons, so the app and this website always agree. When the grades and the buttons point different ways, the app says why.
  • Leather, shoes, bags and jewelry aren't graded.

What a grade can't tell you: grades are estimates from published fiber data, not lab tests of your piece. How a garment is made, dyed and finished matters too, and a label can't show it.

Where the numbers come from: Ecobalyse, France's textile eco-score · Textile Exchange, organic cotton LCA · Zambrano et al., NC State, biodegradation · Napper & Thompson, microfibers in the wash · Shuvo 2020, fiber properties · TENCEL™ lyocell, Higg MSI · Carbon footprint of fiber trades, 2025 · Made-By Benchmark · Sustain Your Style · and the sources on our Fabric Ranking.
